Subject: No Greetings Cards From Web Sites Seen Here From: Flash_Sender@Using_Web_Site I append http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/std/no_greetings_cards.txt You asked if I saw your greeting `[e]card' you sent from some web site ? No, I had not even seen their email, pointing to a page on their web site. Nice of you to think of me, Thanks, but after someone asks, I search spam directories, & usually find my spam filter has silently discarded the greeting `card' web site's mail, ready for automatic deletion later. Why Greetings Web Sites Get Automatically Silently Discarded: - They emit text that looks like spam, eg Get Adobe Flash player Gef\xe4llt Ihnen diese Karte? M\xf6chten Sie auch eine Karte verschicken? Klicken Sie hier - They don't send direct _from_ your personal known good addresses, (which is usually already in my white list to accept from) - They just include your name somewhere in their mail they send me. - My filter just searches the header From/Sender lines for each person's name, including yours, in my white list. - If my filter were to be extended to search the entire body of every mail for every person's name in my white list, that would be very problematic in several ways. - I do not white list names of companies operating web to mail services. - They sometimes send in wasteful HTML format, favourite of spammers, http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/std/no_html_format.txt http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/std/no_mail_formats.txt - They usually require Flash. Flash player is a security risk: http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/std/no_flash_to_me.txt - They usually require recipient to go on line, to their site, just to read their page, (maybe burdened by advertising). No thanks, far too inefficient & slow, & liable to waiting if delays on local net, gate, remote net or servers. I read email Off Line, no need for continuous continuous internet connectivity, which costs money & security. If you want to again mail me greetings again some time, please send simple mail direct from your personal address.
